The Finer Details
Otherwise known as the Wishbone Chair - due to the distinctive shape of the back-rest support - Wegner’s Wishbone Chair is one of the most famous icons of mid-century Danish design. The chair’s design is a masterpiece of stunning simplicity. Wegner created the Wishbone Chair in 1949 as the last of a series inspired by paintings of Danish merchants in Chinese Ming chairs. With its curved back legs tapering to join the back rail, its silhouette remains by far the most well-known of those chairs. The Wishbone chair is a minimalist’s delight, with a light but strong and elegant frame coupled with a paper-cord seat that’s comfortable to sit on. Its reputation makes it a popular choice for some of the world’s best hotels and restaurants.

Hans J. Wegner
Known as the “Master of Chairs”, Hans Wegner was one of the most influential and leading figures around interior design through the 1940s to 1960s. His most iconic and recognisable work is often to be considered what’s simply called “The Chair”. When used in the 1960 US election debate between Kennedy and Nixon, the Chair’s (and Wegner’s) fame exploded.
It was far from his only work. Throughout his life, Wegner designed over 500 chairs, with 100 of those going into mass production. Combining a prolific productivity with an unmistakable eye for interior design, some of Wegner’s other best-known works included the Ox Chair, the Wing Chair and the Shell Chair.
Given the opportunity early in his career to work for Arne Jacobsen, Wegner was able to refine his skills under another of Denmark’s leading designers. His talent was undeniable, and after several years he established his own workshop and started designing his “Chinese” chairs, which would lead to another of his most popular pieces, the Wishbone Chair.
Excellent service and while waiting for production of the chairs. They answered questions about the country and area of production in this time of Covid-19, as well as response to status requests. The chairs look great and that is one thing off my bucket list! No one would know that Carl did not make these.
I was totally amazed by my experience with Interior Icons. I got my chairs in 3 days of ordering them. They were beautifully and carefully packaged. All in great condition when they arrived. The quality of the chairs is exceptional. And these chairs are as comfortable as they are iconic. I couldn't be more pleased.
I was hesitant to buy this affordable reproduction, but am extremely pleased with it. It looks exactly like pictures I’ve seen of an original and the workmanship is perfect. I only bought one and it will not get heavy use, since it is a desk chair in a guest room. So, I can’t speak to how it holds up with regular use. But for my purposes, I couldn’t be happier: it’s stylish, modern - great!
Beautifully made dining chairs. I bought two for my wife and I. We are both enjoying them so far.
Beautiful chairs. They work great for dining. The seat is comfortable, but I bought the extra cushion for extra padding.
