    Finn Juhl

Self-taught in furniture design, mastermind Finn Juhl was the very first designer to garner international recognition for his creations. Although he studied architecture and graduated from the Royal Academy of Copenhagen, Juhl was perhaps most proud of his self-taught furniture designer status.

As a 20-something graduate, Juhl produced his first furniture piece in the late ‘30s. He then started his own business in 1945, and became known for creating unique, expressive, sculptural furniture items. He worked with master cabinet maker Niels Vodder, and found inspiration in modern, abstract art pieces.

Juhl preferred to focus on form, and paid little attention to functionality. He once said, "One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects, but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones."
