The Finer Details
Taking its name from the mascot of the Michelin tire company whose form it invokes, the Bibendum chair is constructed from three layers of chunky cushioning which cocoon around the body. Originally designed by Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray in the 20s but only finding global renown in the 70s, the Bibendum chair is a timeless design, fusing elements of art deco, Bauhaus, and modern design to create something truly iconic. Gray’s quintessentially imaginative, innovative, and playful approach to design can be felt in the chair’s unusual form and inviting characteristics, making it more than worthy of its global renown.

She began her career as a traditional designer, but Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray later transitioned into modern design, which she is now known for. Gray was a renowned furniture designer and architect. Finding success in these areas was almost unheard of for women during her time, making Gray’s success that much more noteworthy.
The Irish designer was an admirer of modern architect Le Corbusier, and used his influence to build her own French summerhouse, called the E1027. Her Bibendum Chair was a 20th century masterpiece, and she later collaborated with Romanian architect Jean Badovici to create the stunning E-1027 table.
In addition to her designing success, Gray also had a way with words. She once said, “To create, one must first question everything.”
