Inspired by his designer friend Florence Knoll, who challenged Saarinen with the task of designing a cozy, relaxing chair worthy of curling up in, Saarinen didn’t waste any time creating just what Knoll had asked for. Gleaning its name from the shape of the chair and the way it cradles the human form, the Womb Chair is perhaps the comfiest, coziest seating solution in designer history. The coordinating stool is the perfect add-on, creating an even more relaxing environment.
Create a womb-like oasis
While the Womb Stool is certainly worthy of praise on its own, we’d be remiss not to recommend pairing it with the coordinating chair and/or settee. With the ability to instantly add an air of contentment and charm to any space, you can’t go wrong with any of these peace-promoting pieces.
Built for longevity
In addition to creating comforting furnishings, Saarinen demanded quality, only crafting his creations from the finest materials available. With proper care, this stool is certain to be passed down through multiple generations.
Interior Icons vs Traditional Retail
By cutting out the middle men and traditional 200-400% markup, we’re able to offer you beautiful, lasting designer furniture at exceptional value.
Eero Saarinen’s penchant for perfection made him an impeccable designer. The Finnish-American architect opted for a sculptural approach when it came to his furniture designs. The aesthetic worked for him, a he grew obsessed with achieving the perfect curve or line.
Saarinen’s design process was a long and tedious one. He was so tuned into the details that he’d build hundreds of versions of a piece until it was visually and functionally flawless. The designer’s time was certainly not wasted; his innovative designs include the iconic Tulip Armchair, the Tulip Table and the Womb Chair.
Envisioning the placement of a piece proved to be a key to Saarinen’s great success. "Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan," he once said.
Very happy with the the red chair and ottoman.
We love the product. Hard to tell the difference from the original. Downside: Delivery person had to be convinced to bring the boxes to the front door. He wanted to leave them in the driveway, which would have been very inconvenient. Even though he had a hand truck, he wasn't anxious to take it out. Though he did it in the end, it wasn't a pleasant experience.
I bought the ottoman and matching womb chair. I thought I knew what the the feel of the chair was as I know people who have the authentic womb chair and I have always loved the looks of it and sitting in it. This chair didn’t feel quite right to me and it didn’t feel comfortable enough to keep. I have a small living room and want to feel like the furniture I have is comfortable. It was quite expensive to rerun these items and stressfull. My advice is to make sure you like the chair first before ordering the ottoman.
Well constructed- ottoman came with a small tear and upon modifying the company a replacement was shipped with 24hrs- very good customer service
