The Finer Details
When Mies van der Rohe designed the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Expo held in Catalonia, Spain, he didn’t stop at the architecture. He also designed the furniture, creating in the process the world-famous Manhattan Chair. As a leading Bauhaus Modernist figure, van der Rohe might’ve been expected to provide well-designed but affordable furniture. On this occasion, he made an exception, creating pieces that were designed and fit for Spanish royalty. The Manhattan chair was a perfect example. With a tilted seat and thickly padded cushions, the Manhattan Chair is a pleasure to relax on. The seat rests perfectly on an elegant angled frame constructed from polished steel, providing a modern touch to the design. The tufted upholstery is available in standard or premium leather to give it one last dash of luxury.

Mies Van Der Rohe
Known commonly as just “Mies”, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a leading architect throughout the twentieth century and a pioneer of the modernist architectural movement. While his fame in architecture is well-known, his career actually began as a furniture designer. It was only soon after that his talent for architecture was recognised, and while the First World War interrupted his fledgling career, van der Rohe would create dozens of historic and unique constructions over the next five decades.
Perhaps it was that brief time in his first job that influenced him, but van der Rohe had a penchant for designing modern furniture along with his architectural wonders. For example, his series of furniture that accompanied the Barcelona Pavilion for the 1929 International Expo (also designed by him) is especially recognisable.
