Celebrated for his prolific multi-decade career in architecture, art, and furniture design, Le Corbusier is widely known for his many contributions throughout the 20th century. Born in Switzerland in 1887 as Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, Le Corbusier began investing his time learning to enamel and engrave watch faces at the age of 13; these processes happened to be his father’s specialty.

The designer went on to develop a unique vision for innovation in urban areas, effortlessly replacing traditional designs with revolutionary architectural contributions. He was intent on redefining architecture to meet the needs of city dwellers in the new technological age. In 1923, he eloquently described his drive to facilitate change in the world of design, stating “Modern life demands, and is waiting for, a new kind of plan, both for the house and the city.”

When Le Corbusier was just 18, he built a home for one of his teachers. Not long after, he relocated to Paris to study under pioneering architect, Auguste Perret. Here, Le Corbusier learned to work with reinforced steel and concrete.

Over the next several years, the designer immersed himself in various design practices. In Berlin, he learned everything there was to know about machine design and industrial processes from German architect, Peter Behrens. Later, in 1917, he developed the Purism painting concept alongside French painter, Amédée Ozenfant. He went on to write many books, and he collaborated with fellow designers to create innovative and eye-catching furniture pieces.

Along with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier designed stunningly sleek seating solutions in which he utilized tubular steel and natural hide. In addition to his many offerings to urban spaces, Le Corbusier’s contributions include a plethora of interior designs and modern art pieces.

Sadly, the designer’s life ended tragically in 1965 while he was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Still, his legacy lives on through his beautifully unique, iconic designs.
